Photos: Colombians burn life size dolls of Steve Harvey to usher in the New Year

Many Colombians are still upset with Steve Harvey for his mistake during the Miss Universe pageant in which he announced the wrong winner. They used an old New Year Eve tradition "Ano Viego" to show their anger. It's a Colombian tradition to burn dolls at New Years day. Thousands of dolls get made but this time some people decided to add a Steve Harvey effigy to the mix.

In fact Harvey was the most popular doll this year. Also burnt were effigy of Miss Universe, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. The term, "Año Viejo," literally means old year in Spanish. In Central and South America, the tradition is to make a doll that represents things you hate from the previous year and thus, you're burning it away at midnight and basically letting it go. It is believed that the act wards off bad luck in the coming year.

Road Crashes Reduced By 33% During Yuletide – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the number of road crashes have reduced by 33% during the festive period, compared with the statistics of crashes during the same period in 2014.  

The FRSC’s record showed that 113 crashes happened between December 19 and 26, 2015, an improvement of over 169 crashes recorded during same period in 2014.

A representative of the Abuja Sector Commander, Mr Udeme Eshret at a joint forum with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja on Sunday, attributed the improvement to the cooperation it enjoyed from the public as well as a robust collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Little boy with cancer who Paul Okoye & wife helped with his surgery has died

Sometime in November, Paul Okoye granted his wife's birthday by paying the medical bills of cancer patient, little Eniola (Read story here). Sadly, Eniola died after the treatment. Paul took to his Instagram account to relay the sad news. He wrote;

"2 months ago I shared a story about a young boy who has cancer.... We contributed in saving this young boys life and also some good Nigerians donated too....God bless everyone who tried and did their best. But the sad news is that we lost him last month... Was told after the surgery he could not stand the pains..:: RIP Eniola. we miss you, you re in good hands now with your creator(God)..bless" May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

Last night Chris Brown was accused of punching Brazil's Kim Kardashian look-alike in the face after 'she took his photo during party in Vegas hotel suite'. Viziane Gutierrez told TMZ Chris Brown punched her in the face and took her phone from her after she snuck a camera into his Las Vegas hotel suite and took a picture of him without his consent, an accusation he vehemently denies, calling her 'old and dusty' in a bizarre video posted online.

Gutierrez said she left the party, and called police some hours later. Vegas police have confirmed the incident was reported to them and said that they are investigating Chris for battery and theft.

The All Progressives Congress, APC has lashed out on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over what it calls the unguarded statement and abuses heaped on the party’s leadership and the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

In a strongly worded statement from the National Chairman of the party, John Oyegun, the APC warned the PDP to stop calling the President names and learn how to be an opposition political party.

He said that the party would not tolerate situations where the PDP makes abusive statements capable of causing disrespect for the Office of the President.

He said, “The APC is worried by PDP's inciting statements. Respect for the office of the president or heads of government in any clime is not a matter of choice but a civic obligation sanctioned by laws. Being an opposition party or critic is no license to issue abusive, intemperate and slanderous statements on government officials; most especially the president of the country.”

“Let me remind you that the office of the president is sacred and should not be denigrated by any political party, group or any society," he added.

Following the presidential media chat, the PDP had criticized the President’s anti-corruption campaign and accused him of lying to the people of Nigeria by promoting double standards and refusing to obey the rule of law.

“For the umpteenth time, the APC urges Nigerians who see merit in the war that the President Buhari-led administration is waging against corruption, not to be distracted by the PDP and their agents of corruption to discredit the war. For the records, the ongoing war against corruption is not selective. Anybody guilty of corrupt practices will face the law.

“If the PDP has any proof of corruption against any APC member or minister as alleged, we advise that they approach any of the anti-graft agencies constitutionally mandated to handle such cases.

“PDP's rant suggesting a selective anti-corruption fight by the present administration should be seen as a plot meant to distract the citizenry from the successful ongoing war against graft.

“The PDP does not have the luxury of dictating how the present administration carries out its legitimate duty of catching looters, as long as it conforms with the rule of law,” Oyegun said.

Evidence suggests that the Islamic State's power has been declining for months.

There was a time when the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria appeared unstoppable. In September and October, as the jihadist group captured territory through a major offensive in Iraq's Anbar province, culminating in the fall of the town of Hit on October 13, observers feared that even Baghdad was in danger of being overrun. ISIS is now in the midst of another major military movement in Anbar, but the always-overblown fears about the organization's advance are now receding—and the group's decline has grown increasingly apparent.

ISIS's signature attributes, ferocity and unpredictability, have raised the group's profile and inspired a spate of lone-wolf attackers. But the organization has also made several strategic errors along the way. The Islamic State's lifeblood is partially money and territory, but primarily momentum against weak and ill-prepared enemies. And that momentum, which peaked in early August, has stalled.

WNU Editor: Their momentum has declined .... but a part of me wonders if they are more focused on consolidating their territories instead of conquering new ones.

Borno hunters appeal to Nigerian army to allow them enter Sambisa to fight Boko Haram

Borno state hunters have appealed to the Nigerian Army to allow them access into the dreaded Sambisa forest which is believed to be the camp of the terror group, Boko Haram. The emir of hunters in the state Mai-Gana Mai-Durma while addressing the media in Maiduguri said they are very familiar with the terrain of the much dreaded forest and so should be allowed to go in and fight the terrorist.

"We are appealing to the military authorities to allow us join the fight against Boko Haram at the Sambisa forest. We are ready to pursue the terrorists because we know the terrain very well. We will overrun Sambisa in partnership with members of the civilian JTF if given the opportunity. This will help to complement the effort of military in the anti terrorism operation. Hunters from all the 27 Borno LGAs are all in Maiduguri with our leaders doing nothing at present because of Boko Haram. Rather than idling away, we will want to assist the military in crushing Boko Haram terrorists."he said

Over 50 shops were razed in a fire incident that occurred at the popular Abdulkadir Kure Market in Minna Niger state in the early hours of today January 3rd. Goods and cash worth billions of Naira were lost in the inferno. A bureau de change operator identified as Mr Salisu lost over N40 million in the incident. See more photos after the cut...

Most of the traders had their money in their shops due to the long holidays and were waiting to go and deposit their sales money in the bank tomorrow January 4th when business activities will resume when this incident happened. NEMA officials are at the scene to conduct a first hand assessment of the damage. Continue to see more photos
